This year’s Survivor of a Car Accident Scholarship was awarded to Rutgers Law School student Emani Miles. At Bader Scott Injury Lawyers, we are dedicated to benefitting local, state, and nationwide communities. We offer four annual scholarships to current and incoming college students. These include the Future Lawyers of America Scholarship, the Survivor of a Car Accident Scholarship, the Future Lawyers of Georgia Scholarship, and the Workers’ Compensation Scholarship.
Each scholarship winner is awarded $2,500 to fund their college courses. This award helped alleviate some of Emani Miles’ financial stress after getting hit by a car.
Scholarship Winner Emani Miles Faces Car Accident Injuries
On April 20, 2022, Emani Miles was hit by a car while walking to the train station from class. A distracted driver making a left turn hit Miles, leaving her with injuries to her leg, neck, and back.
Miles recalls feeling heartbroken after the accident. The driver who hit her did not offer any help. It wasn’t until another driver stopped to assist her that she was sent to the hospital. She also waited hours for medical care until her mother arrived at the hospital and demanded her daughter see a doctor.
Unable to walk for months, Miles relied on her family for support. She could no longer work the part-time job that helped support herself and her family. Miles also had to overcome the challenges she faced in school, as her accident was just one week before her law school exams.

Miles did not let this overwhelming experience stop her from pursuing her studies. Despite the physical and emotional impact of her injuries, Miles completed her second year of law school.
In her scholarship essay, Miles writes, “It [the accident] inspired me to reaffirm my commitment to becoming an attorney for marginalized communities who endure much of the same struggle I have endured.” In a situation where many people would have felt discouraged, Miles persevered.
Miles decided to attend law school to work in public interest law. She plans to work with political prisoners and people wrongfully convicted. Her law school coursework has been centered around systemic racism, family law systems, gender identity, and sexuality studies. She also hopes to become a professor of Black history courses later in her career.
The Survivor of a Car Accident Scholarship will allow Miles to focus on her recovery and law school coursework. She decided to apply for the scholarship to have her story heard. She hopes her experience will remind pedestrians and drivers about how distracted driving can impact someone’s life. After the challenges she has overcome, Miles is a rightful scholarship recipient.
