You may recognize Saff from Tiger King, the stand out docuseries on Netflix which has been entertaining the world throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.  Following zoo and big cat owner Joe Exotic, the series looked into the drama surrounding the world of big cat conservationists and collectors.

Amid a global pandemic, Saff shook the world sharing his story of losing an arm in a tiger mauling during his job as a keeper at Joe’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. Due to each state determining its own compensation benefits, it means that losing an arm could equate to very different results depending on where you are with a personal injury claim. 

When it comes to life-changing injuries Nevada has the largest maximum compensation by far at $859,634. At nearly half the amount, losing an arm in Illinois could see you the maximum payout of $439,858. Closely followed with Kentucky at $402,277.

Using amputation data from 2010 to 2014 we looked at the percentage increase in the number of amputations performed per state, calculating trends upto 2020 and standardizing this per 100,000 of the population of each state. This means we are then able to see the states where the most amputations occur. In Kentucky 97.4 out of 100,000 people lost a limb alongside West Virginia with 95.2. Whereas your arms are safer in Utah where 33.9 out of 100,000 underwent amputation with Wyoming not far ahead with 39.

Interestingly, Kentucky’s high rate of amputations matches its higher maximum compensation but this doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the value you could receive in this unfortunate situation. If left to insurance companies the lifelong impact of your claim may not be fully investigated.
